General:
Chatham, a Federal way mansion with numerous outbuildings, was built past William and Anne Randolph Fitzhugh from 1768 to 1771. William Fitzhugh (1742-ca. 1790) was a prominent citizen of colonial Virginia, fellow member of the House of Burgesses, the House of Delegates, and the Continental Congress. The firm is set on a hill overlooking the Rappahannock River and the celebrated town of Fredericksburg. More than 1,200 acres surrounded the firm and were farmed past slaves. The property was named for the Earl of Chatham and the house and gardens were English in style. The garden was laid out in terraces leading to the river with a broad Adams mode (neoclassical) stairway leading from the house. The original ornamental gardens did not survive occupation past the Matrimony army during the Civil War, simply were restored to emulate the style of their original 18th century blueprint in ca. 1924 by landscape builder Ellen Biddle Shipman when the property was owned by Colonel and Mrs. Daniel B. Devore. Garden features at this time included a terracotta statue of Diana, box edged parterres, all-encompassing rose gardens, Virginia red cedars used as borders, and viii bird gardens with birdhouses and runs for pheasants or peacocks.
The gardens designed by Ellen Biddle Shipman ca. 1924 included extensive flower beds planted for successive display throughout the growing season, first with snowdrops and daffodils, and ending with chrysanthemums. There were box-edged beds of Darwin tulips, iris, phlox, delphinium, Madonna lilies, and many other species. There were clipped cedar hedges, an avenue of dogwood, espaliered fruit trees, and painted brick piers with Ionic capitals planted with roses.
Much of Shipman's garden was discontinued in the 1950s during the ownership of John Lee Pratt, although the rose garden and boxed parterres were maintained. Further restoration of the Colonial-era gardens has been carried out since the holding was deeded to the National Park Service in 1975. The Garden Gild of Virginia funded a fellowship to document the garden in 2006.
William Fitzhugh and descendants owned the property from 1768 to 1806. Major Churchill Jones and descendants owned Chatham from 1806 to 1872, although the family left during the Civil War ca. 1862-1865 while the business firm was used every bit headquarters and infirmary past the Marriage ground forces. Oliver Watson and family unit owned Chatham from 1872 to 1889. Chatham was owned by Albert O. Mays from 1889 to 1900. Fleming G. and Elizabeth H. Bailey were the owners from 1900 to 1909. The Howard and Smith families endemic the property from 1909 to 1914. Chatham was purchased by Marking Sullivan in 1914 and sold to Colonel and Mrs. Daniel Bradford Devore in 1920, who then sold in 1931 to John Lee Pratt, who willed Chatham to the National Park Service in 1975. Information technology is at present included in the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Armed services Park and is open to the public.

Full general:
The belatedly Federal/early Greek Revival Pruyn Firm has public gardens planted and maintained by two garden clubs, the Fort Orange Garden Club, designers of the cutting and habitat gardens, and the Blue Creek Garden Club, which installed and maintained the herb garden until 2009. The gardens characteristic continuous flower for the enjoyment and educational activity of the public and to provide plant materials for arrangements in Pruyn House. Traditional annuals and perennials have been propagated elsewhere by members of the garden committee, and they besides conduct trial plantings of new or unusual varieties of flowers. Originally the cutting garden had 14 rectangular beds in a 40 by fourscore human foot plot with the celebrated tool shed, which has been renovated. The planting scheme has been modified over the years to remove varieties that were not suited to the sandy soil or the severe winters. The plants are labeled and a comprehensive list is located in the tool shed for the garden's visitors. The habitat garden was created in 2007 to attract monarch butterflies, and features milkweed and brightly colored annuals and perennials.
The original 700 acre property was acquired in 1632 from Native American tribes past Kiliaen Van Rensselaer (b.1580-d.1643) of Holland. Victorian Garden, formerly known as.
Full general:
The Enid A. Haupt Garden was dedicated on May 22, 1987. It is located betwixt the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arts and Industries Edifice, and southward of the Smithsonian Establishment Building, commonly referred to every bit the Castle. This iv.3 acre area actually sits atop the Quadrangle complex - an underground facility made upwardly of three Smithsonian museum spaces: the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the National Museum of African Art, and the Southward. Dillon Ripley Middle. In a higher place-basis kiosk entrances to the Sackler and African Art museums are located in the Haupt Garden itself. The Haupt Garden contains three discrete gardens within it: the Parterre, the Moongate Garden, and the Fountain Garden.
After the Castle'south construction was completed in 1855, the area to its due south became known as the S Thou. In 1887, it functioned as a zoo for bison to promote the conservation of their over-hunted population. The bison were moved to the newly-established National Zoological Park in 1889, and for nearly a century, the South Yard was home to a number of dissimilar buildings including the Drome Shop, a solar radiation lab, a bug business firm (where beetles cleaned skeletal remains of animal specimens), temporary storage and collection buildings, a U.S. Army hangar, and a greenhouse and Quonset hut for the Office of Horticulture. In 1976, the Smithsonian'south Function of Horticulture (now Smithsonian Gardens) planted the Victorian Garden parterre on the S Yard, in celebration of America'southward Bicentennial and to complement a Victoriana exhibition on horticulture in the next Arts and Industries Edifice. This garden was inspired by a similar parterre made for the 1876 Centennial celebration in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter authorized $500,000 for the planning and structure of the Quadrangle - an undercover complex congenital in the Due south Yard - to business firm the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the National Museum of African Art, and the Due south. Dillon Ripley Center. In 1982, the Victorian Garden was removed. Structure on the Quadrangle spanned from June 21, 1983 to 1987. Builder Jean Paul Carlhian of the house Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson and Abbot was in accuse of designing the Quadrangle complex which incorporated an initial design concept by Japanese architect Junzo Yoshimura.
In one case basic construction was complete and soil returned to the ground-level (i.e. roof) of the Quadrangle, it was articulate that there was more room for gardens beyond the reincorporated parterre. Smithsonian Secretary S. Dillon Ripley invited philanthropist Enid A. Haupt to tour the garden site, hoping Mrs. Haupt would finance a Zen garden w of the parterre. In fact, she financed the entire design and structure of the new garden with a $3 million endowment, stipulating that the garden be mature when it opened in 1987. With funds in place, work on the garden began, with the primary goal being to harmonize the stylistically varied buildings in and around the Quadrangle (the three archway pavilions to the cloak-and-dagger museums, the Smithsonian Castle, Freer Gallery of Art, and the Arts and Industries Building). The design of the garden was a collaborative endeavour between principal architect Jean Paul Carlhian, the landscape architectural firm Sasaki Associates, Inc., landscape builder Lester Collins, and James R. Buckler, Manager of the Smithsonian'south Part of Horticulture. Together they designed the three gardens described below.
Enid A. Haupt (1906-2005) was a publishing heiress and philanthropist who especially supported American horticulture. In addition to this garden, Mrs. Haupt'southward horticultural philanthropy created and/or preserved several renowned garden spaces including The Enid A. Haupt Glass Garden at the Howard A. Rusk Found, NYU Medical Center in New York City; the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, New York; The Haupt Fountains on the Ellipse in Washington, D.C.; River Farm in Alexandria, Virginia; and The Cloisters in New York City. In 1994, the American Horticultural Society awarded her the Liberty Hyde Bailey award for her philanthropy.
The Parterre is the Victorian-mode centerpiece of the Haupt Garden. It is a advisedly manicured garden with a changing palette of colors and textures, laid out in symmetrical patterns that are redesigned every few seasons. Designs comprise such motifs as diamonds, fleurs-de-lis, and scallops. While parterre is a French term significant "on the ground," parterres equally an ornamental garden manner originated in 16th century Renaissance Italia.
The Moongate Garden is side by side to the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, and was inspired by the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, China. The Temple of Heaven was designed using a geometrical, axial layout, centered on the cardinal points of the compass. The Moongate Garden'due south dominant features are stone and h2o, which symbolize the torso and spirit of the earth in Chinese culture. Two ix-foot-tall pink granite moon gates stand on the southwest and northeast corners of the garden; two more prevarication as benches in the contrary corners. A circular platform lies in the centre of a granite-paved square pool, connected by bridges to each side of the square.
The Fountain Garden is next to the National Museum of African Art, and was modeled after the Courtroom of the Lions at Alhambra, a 13th-century Moorish palace in Granada, Kingdom of spain. Every bit with nearly Islamic gardens, the Fountain Garden is symmetrical and includes a central fountain with iv water channels. Respectively, these channels represent paradise itself, and the 4 rivers of paradise described in the Koran: water, milk, honey, and vino. At the garden's north end is a chadar - a patterned, sloping stone ramp that has h2o running downward it.
The Renwick Gates are bandage atomic number 26 wagon gates at the garden'due south entrance on Independence Artery. The gates were erected in 1979, based on an 1849 drawing by James Renwick, Jr., architect of the Castle. The design includes piers made of the aforementioned sandstone that went into the Castle's slap-up reddish walls from a quarry in Seneca, Maryland.
A European linden tree one time stood in the northeast corner of the S G. When construction on the Quadrangle began, Secretary Ripley directed that the tree remain unharmed. Construction personnel and arborists minded the tree, helping information technology live through the cease of construction. Nevertheless, it died of erstwhile age two years later, in 1989.
The Downing Urn was originally erected on the National Mall in 1856 in retentivity of landscape designer and horticulturist Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-1852). The urn was restored in 1972. In 1989, it was moved to where the linden tree had stood in the Haupt Garden.
Plantings include saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana), Wollemi pino (Wollemia nobilis), weeping Higan cherry (Prunus pendula 'Pendula Rosea'), gold shrimp plant (Pachystachys lutea), coneflower (Echinacea), dusty miller (Senecio cineraria), and pansy (Viola x wittrockiana).
Persons associated with the garden include: Enid A. Haupt (donor, 1987). Jean Paul Carlhian (principal architect, 1987). Lester Collins (landscape architect consultant, 1987). Constantine Seferlis (stonecarver, 1979). James Renwick Jr. (architect, 1849). James Goode (SI Castle keeper, blueprint and structure supervisor, 1979-1987). S. Dillon Ripley (Smithsonian Secretarial assistant, 1964-1984). Michael Riordan (horticulturist, 1995- ).
